New Moon in Aquarius

31 January / 1 February 2022

Electricity is in the air. Light travels faster than sound—you see it before you hear the thunder and the time between each tells you how close the storm is. Right now we are seeing flashes of lightning as new ideas enter the collective and the voices of people are rumbling louder.

Aquarius is the sign of the revolutionist. It breaks down the rules and restrictions that Capricorn put in place and creates something new. It’s unique, unexpected and doesn’t play by the rules. And the best thing about it is that it operates for the greater good of the collective.

This is a month of breaking free of restrictions and social traditions. It’s about relying on our creativity and ingenuity in finding a new way forward. The peak of this will occur later in the month on the Leo Full Moon, when we will also have Venus and Mars meet up for the first of their conjunctions this year, so you can look forward to that. But for now, let’s look at what is right in front of us.

This New Moon also falls on the same day as the Lunar New Year. We will be entering the Year of the Water Tiger. I’m no expert on Chinese Astrology, but from what I can gather the Water Tiger carries elements of unpredictability, with moments of wild exuberance followed by lulls.

It’s a reminder of the importance of strategy, to look before you leap just as a tiger quietly watches its prey before making a move—you want to have everything lined up as best you can before you take outward action, then rest and gather your energy for the next thing.

It’s an Aquarius season which is still heavy on the Capricorn. Venus and Mercury are lingering, still with the sluggishness of retrograde hanging over them. Mars has recently joined them and his forward momentum can help give us a burst of motivation.

Venus stationed direct on January 29, ending her 40 days of retrograde where we focused on our relationship values. Mercury will end its retrograde on February 3/4 (depending on where you live in the world). This then means that all the planets are direct for the next three months so we won’t feel like we are pushing a boulder uphill so much. We can now move forward with our renewed ideas, values and refreshed relationships that these retrogrades have brought us.

The Aquarian influence wants us to look to the future, to progress for the common good. The New Moon is conjunct Saturn. It is the taskmaster of the Zodiac, pushing us to create meaningful change through grounded action.

The influence of Uranus square the New Moon will help to give us a burst of inspiration, to help us think outside the box. I think it’s fair to say that the way we used to do things is well and truly over and we are in the awkward stages of working through who we want to be next. It’s a bit like being a teenager dealing with body and hormonal changes and trying to work out who you are—the process isn’t always smooth but you know you have to go through it.

With all the Capricorn energy it might feel like a heavier Aquarius season but I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing. The beauty of this is we can tap into the Aquarian energy to get all those wonderful new ideas that will progress ourselves and the collective forward, then the Capricorn energy can do its practical checks and balances.

Pay attention to the flashes of inspiration, listen to the rumbles. Grab hold of them. Nurture them. This is a time to be your unique self, to bring your unique ideas into the world.
