New Moon in Cancer

New Moon in Cancer, 9/10 July 2021

It’s fair to say that life has been wobbly lately, and will continue to feel wobbly for some time. In the past we have had time to integrate big planet energy before moving onto the next, but now it seems that each event is banging into the other like a line of dominoes.

So it is with this in mind that the Cancer New Moon offers us some respite, inviting us to rest and replenish.

Ruled by the moon, Cancer teaches us about the ebb and flow of life, of trusting your intuition and gut-feelings. Cancer feels its way through life, and it feels deeply.

Just as the moon waxes and wanes each month, we also find our moods and emotions changing day-to-day. Sometimes we are up, sometimes down. Sometimes we feel full of energy, sometimes we just want to sleep. It is when we tune in and honour our own rhythms that we feel in the flow of life.

Cancer is represented by the crab, who carries its home with it wherever it goes. When a crab feels vulnerable, it pulls its soft body into the protection of its hard shell. That is Cancer: protecting its delicate insides with a tough exterior, needing to withdraw from the world to recharge.

It is at home that we should nurture ourselves, that we should feel safe. It is our respite—the place we can be ourselves—hidden from the harsh realities of the world outside our walls. We put up boundaries to stop threats from coming in, but at the same time we can get so used to living a certain way that we forget to let ourselves out. Where and how can you open your heart?

This is a New Moon which celebrates the balance of the masculine and the feminine, recognising the role that each plays in our lives. The Sun is masculine, the Moon feminine. Likewise, Mars is masculine and Venus is feminine. While the luminaries are tending to our inner and outer worlds, the personal planets are conjunct in creative Leo, sharing the inspiration for ideas and how to action them.

Creating a Grand Cross with Venus and Mars we have a bit more tension with Uranus inspiring the change and Saturn bringing the steadiness and long-term view we need. It’s a combination of a desire for freedom, holding on to the status quo and a yearning for pleasure and fun. Tensions in a chart can often mean breakthroughs are made as we are forced to find creative solutions. Again, it’s about letting our intuition guide us towards the best actions.

Mercury is now clear of its post-retrograde shadow and heading away from its square to Neptune. While this tension may have dropped creative solutions in your lap, the flip side is it may have clouded a situation. The truth and the reasons behind why it all played out the way it did will now become clear.

Family and foundations fall under Cancer’s domain, as do traditions. A Cancer New Moon is a good time for healing and renewing familial relationships, resetting your home life or leaning into traditions—both old and new.

But at its core is the need to look at how we nurture ourselves. To wrap ourselves in a big warm hug and bunker down with who and what comforts us.
