Unexpectedly expected

Full Moon in Taurus, October 2020

Normally a Full Moon in Taurus brings us a bit of relief from the intensity of Scorpio season. Scorpio goes to the depths of life (and the underworld) whereas Taurus is happiest enjoying life’s earthly pleasures.

This year the Full Moon is on Halloween (technically in the Southern Hemisphere we are celebrating the opposite holiday, Beltane, which is a celebration of life rather than the dead). It’s a time when the veil between worlds is thinner, where we can play with putting on a disguise to be someone else for the night. And with all of that, I’d normally advise to enjoy the pleasures of Halloween: the food, dressing up, the parties.

But this is 2020. A year that has torched the rule book.

To add extra oomph this month, the Moon will be conjunct Uranus. Uranus brings the energy of change and has been shaking up the Taurus part of our charts since 2018. Uranus getting mixed up with the Full Moon means we might feel a huge change in our emotional connection to certain things or situations which have felt like they would never change.

For Taurus, change is uncomfortable. Taurus is grounded and steady. Uranus is the cyclone coming through the town. Once the cyclone is over, we see what has been destroyed and what is still standing. The structures that remain are the ones that are worth keeping. The rest we can rebuild.

Tauris is patient, it doesn’t rush. It knows that it’s better to wait to buy the high-quality goods that last rather than settle for a cheaper item that will fall apart quickly. It teaches us to surround ourselves with the things we value, the things that make us feel secure, the things we enjoy. And most importantly, it knows that we are worthy and deserving of it all.

This all means that what we rebuild will have a better foundation and more substance than what had been destroyed.

I’ve been banging on about balancing the ‘we’ and the ‘me’ all year. Venus in Libra is opposite Chiron in Aries, which means that our personal healing through relationships is once again on the agenda. There may be some pain, but from that we will be able to go deeper with our healing.

Mercury has entered the Libra part of its retrograde, and is slowing down getting ready to station direct on November 3. It’s in a square to Saturn, so there is a tendency for heavy thinking and dwelling on things. Communication is extra fraught, especially in regard to the messages we receive from authority figures: we might be told one thing, then have it retracted, only for the original thing to be reinstated. Personally, you could feel really pressured in your decision-making and not be able to come to a conclusion that feels good to you. This vibe will continue until November 7 when Mercury starts to move away from Saturn’s influence.

If you have any planets or angles at 8 degrees of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) you will experience a stronger influence from this Full Moon.

So what can we do amidst all of this? There’s going to be enough change being whipped up with Uranus, and the Sun in Scorpio is shining a light on how we are transforming (evolving being part of Scorpio’s wheelhouse) so keep your feet on the ground. Literally. Go stand barefoot on the earth. And tap into the earthly pleasures in your life. It can be as simple as wearing a fabric that feels nice against your skin and savouring every bite of your food. Think about the ways you honour and respect yourself. Take your time, stand still for a moment.

Then enjoy the unexpected.

A ritual for the Full Moon in Taurus

I have curated a playlist on Spotify to take you through the Taurus themes of values, self-worth, personal money and resources and enjoying the comforts of life. To get the greatest benefit out of it, I recommend that you dance to this. When we dance we move energy through our bodies and can shift things that we didn’t even know we needed to shift. In some cases, we may not even be aware of what we released but just feel generally ‘lighter’ afterwards.

Dancing under the energy of the Full Moon is extra-powerful as this is a natural time for us to release old patterns, beliefs, ideas, emotions that we no longer need. It helps create space within us to invite in something new.

How to do this ritual

Set-up: Find a space in your home where you won’t be disturbed for at least an hour. Make sure you have enough space to dance without bumping into furniture. Have a water bottle on hand so you can stay hydrated. Also have your journal or some paper to record any thoughts that may come up during the ritual.

Head to the Settings in Spotify and make sure you have turned off Autoplay so that once the playlist ends you are able to sit in silence. (If you are using the mobile app you will find Autoplay under Settings - Playback.) Also make sure that you have turned off any other shuffle or repeat settings—you want to listen to the playlist in the order that it has been curated.

Set up any speakers or headphones so that you have the best sound possible. (I like to listen through headphones so I can really block out other sounds and feel into the music.)

Create a mood: Light a candle or some incense, dim the lights.

Read the blog post about the themes of this Full Moon, then perhaps sit in contemplation or journal out some of the things that you personally wish to release and transform.

When you are ready, start the playlist. Move your body in a way that feels intuitive in each moment. No-one is watching so you can really let go of your inhibitions. When moving, I like to close my eyes or have a soft gaze so I stay more in my body. Just make sure you stay aware of where you are in the room so you don’t bang into any furniture and hurt yourself.

The playlist is designed to take you on a journey through the Taurus themes of values, self-worth, personal money and resources and enjoying the comforts of life. If thoughts, feelings or emotions come up for you keep moving them through your body. You might find that certain areas of your body, like your shoulders or hips, feel stiff at first and want to be moved in a certain way. This is your body releasing things that have become stuck.

The final track is a sound healing. Sit or lie down and allow the music to wash over you as your nervous system settles.

Once the music ends, you may find you want to lie in silence for awhile or journal about your experience. Just do whatever comes to you intuitively.

Drink plenty of water after the ritual. Having a shower afterwards or a soak in the bath with some epsom/himalayan sea salts can be really nice as well to help symbolically ‘wash away’ anything that you were releasing. Eating magnesium-rich foods (bananas, almonds, dark chocolate) can also help replenish your system.

You might feel like you have an ‘energetic hangover’ the next day or have emotions come up. Be gentle with yourself, rest when you can, drink lots of water.

I have been working with this style of ritual on the Full Moon for awhile now and have found it to be a great way to release and let go. I hope you find it as beneficial as I do.

With love

Tanya
