Refresh and reboot

New Moon in Virgo, September 2020

I’ve been living through Melbourne’s lockdown restrictions since the beginning of July and felt myself slip into comfort eating, less exercise, low productivity and a general feeling of blah-ness. I was feeling bloated, lethargic, uninspired, unmotivated. I started to make plans to clean up my diet, to reboot my yoga and meditation, to get back to making sure my daily habits made me feel productive and good at the end of the day. Then I looked at my calendar and realised that we were approaching the New Moon in Virgo—a perfect time to set intentions for all of the above.

Virgo is the sign of health and healing, of being discerning and analytical. An earth sign concerned with the here and now, it’s the sign which rules our daily habits and the way in which we are of service to others. It’s also the part of ourselves which is concerned with self-improvement and our work ethic.

So if (like me) you have been feeling like all your good habits have slipped you by, now is a perfect opportunity to reset.

Virgo represents the need to be whole unto ourselves. Our energy can easily get scattered in many different directions, so now is the time to ground and call back all the lost parts of yourself. You can ground by walking barefoot on the grass or sand, going for mindful walks or through meditation where you imagine a cord connecting your root chakra to the centre of the earth.

A number of people have recently told me that they are experiencing digestive issues which is not surprising as Virgo rules digestion—yes, the sign which can help us sort and sift and process our thoughts also helps our bodies sort and sift and process our food.

So if you’ve had an uncomfy tummy of late, how have you been processing your thoughts and digesting life? Are you filling your mind with constant scrolling through social media and reading click-bait articles, or are you getting your news from reputable sources and reading things that nourish your mind? A bit of junk food in an otherwise healthy diet is fine, but if you continually eat fast-food it has a negative effect on you. The same applies to what we put in our minds.

This New Moon also has Mercury in Libra square Jupiter in Capricorn. Normally a square is considered a challenging aspect, but with Jupiter involved it’s like our ability to balance our thoughts and see both sides of a situation is enhanced. Use this energy to help sort out issues that have been bothering you.

Pre-astrology I used to run a lot of goal-setting classes. Achieving a goal requires consistent action steps—it’s like putting a destination (goal) into your GPS and then needing to follow all the steps to get there (actions). This New Moon is trine Saturn in Capricorn. Both Virgo and Capricorn are earth signs, with Virgo focusing on the daily habits and Capricorn the big goal. Saturn in Capricorn will remind us of the big goals we have in our lives and the Virgo new moon will help us put the daily tasks in place that will help us achieve them. Perhaps your goals have changed, perhaps they need a new approach. Either way, it’s an opportune time to hit the reset button.

Mars, the planet of action, is in retrograde until November. So while you may not be fully motivated to take action right now, it is a good time to make plans, to reflect on what motivates you and where and how you are courageous. (Check out my Mars retrograde webinar for more). You may find that frustrations and tempers are a bit out of control at the moment thanks to this retrograde and its aspect to Saturn. Once again exercise and grounding are your best antidotes.

Soon we will head into Libra season and the equinox—a time which is all about creating balance. This New Moon in Virgo is helping us get a head start on creating this equilibrium within ourselves. For when you feel whole within yourself you are more resilient to whatever life throws at you.

Use this time to reset and focus on you. Instead of wishing that things were different, take the actions you need to to make things good right now—whether that is making changes to improve your physical, emotional, mental or spiritual health (or a combo of these).

Always remember, you are your own healer, your own guru. You are whole.

Reflect

+ What have you learnt about yourself this year?

+ What are you grateful for?

+ Have your values changed and if so how?

+ How can you find pleasure and joy in the everyday?

+ Are you taking care of your physical, emotional and spiritual needs?

+ What goals/intentions do you have for yourself? What steps will you take to achieve these?
