Fanning the flames

Full Moon partial eclipse in Sagittarius, June 2020

This year has been intense. In Australia we kicked off 2020 with severe bushfires, now we are living through a global pandemic, with America experiencing riots and revolution.

As one meme put it ‘Congratulations, you have successfully made it to the end of May. Welcome to level 6 of Jumanji’.

Sagittarius is a mutable sign, always on the move. It is the truth-seeker, the traveller, the adventurer. Sagittarius wants to explore knowledge and philosophies deeply and above all believes in freedom.

The time of burying our heads in the sand is over. It’s time to find the truth. For ourselves and the world.

The South Node—which represents the known, past, or path of least resistance—recently moved into Sagittarius where it will be for the next 18 months. And really, the first thing it has shown us is the truth around the depth of inequality for people of colour.

We all knew it was there, but it’s like now the world is sitting up, taking notice and collectively deciding to create a new world. The North Node in Gemini will help us in this, in communicating and finding new solutions.

This Full Moon in Sagittarius is also a partial eclipse. Full Moons are about culminations, or endings. They shine a light so we can see what needs to change. When you add an eclipse into the mix this change can be sudden. This is the first of three eclipses in a row, so strap yourself in and get ready for the ride.

Globally we are going through so much together. And individually there is so much for us to process within ourselves.

We can expect to experience rapid changes which may leave us breathless. After all, Sagittarius is fire and Gemini is air. When you fan the flames they can take off without warning.

So that’s the collective experience. Now, let’s bring it back to you.

At the start of the year, I’m sure you had some idea as to what you wanted 2020 to be like. We had come through a couple of years which had felt kinda rough and we were ready for some lightness, some fun. But now instead of being on a plane on the way to our dreams, it feels like we are stuck at the airport waiting for our flight which has been delayed indefinitely. Constantly checking the departures board isn’t helping, and so we have to find a new way to get where we want to go.

2020 is the ultimate detour, but the detour which is actually leading us in the right direction.

Wherever Sagittarius is in your chart is where you will feel this Full Moon the most. For me, it’s the third house which represents communication, early education, neighbourhood, siblings and short journeys. This is playing out as a change to my business name from Meraki Coaching to Inner Astrology and a move in neighbourhoods which came seemingly out of the blue. Head here to find out which house this will be activating for you.

The Full Moon will be forming a T-square with retrograding Venus in Gemini and Mars in Pisces. T-squares are a challenging aspect, and if there is tension in your relationships, things may come to a head if one or both of you feels like their feelings aren’t being considered or they aren’t being valued.

Sagittarius is a truth-sayer, sometimes expressing things a tad bluntly plus Mars in Pisces can be a bit evasive and unclear with how he asserts himself. The combination can bring about miscommunication and misunderstandings. Before things blow up in your face, first think about what you want to say and the best way to say it. Luckily we have Mercury in Cancer who will lend a compassionate edge to our communication. (A heads-up though that in a few weeks Mercury will go retrograde, but more on that another time.)

So yeah. The world may be f*cked but it’s not a total lost cause. We can use this mutable energy to both be working on the changes to our personal worlds as well as coming together to help create change in the wider world.

For one thing about Sagittarius is that it brings us a sense of buoyancy and optimism. It will all work out for the greater good. Find your truth. Commit to your philosophy. Get ready for change.

A ritual for the Full Moon in Sagittarius

I have curated a playlist on Spotify to take you through the Sagittarius themes of spirituality, truth-seeking, expansion, adventure and optimism.

I completed the playlist a couple of weeks ago, but listening to it again just prior to the Full Moon, a number of the songs took on a new layer of meaning with the background of current events in my mind. But please, connect to the songs in the way that will create most benefit for you.

To get the greatest benefit I recommend that you dance to this playlist. When we dance we move energy through our bodies and can shift things that we didn’t even know we needed to shift. In some cases, we may not even be aware of what we released but just feel generally ‘lighter’ afterwards.

Dancing under the energy of the Full Moon is extra-powerful as this is a natural time for us to release old patterns, beliefs, ideas, emotions that we no longer need. It helps create space within us to invite in something new.

How to do this ritual

Set-up

Find a space in your home where you won’t be disturbed for at least an hour. Make sure you have enough space to dance without bumping into furniture. Have a water bottle on hand so you can stay hydrated. Also have your journal or some paper to record any thoughts that may come up during the ritual.

Head to the Settings in Spotify and make sure you have turned off Autoplay so that once the playlist ends you are able to sit in silence. (If you are using the mobile app you will find Autoplay under Settings - Playback.) Also make sure that you have turned off any other shuffle or repeat settings—you want to listen to the playlist in the order that it has been curated.

Set up any speakers or headphones so that you have the best sound possible. (I like to listen through headphones so I can really block out other sounds and feel into the music.)

Create a mood

Light a candle or some incense, dim the lights.

Read the blog post above about the themes of this Full Moon, then perhaps sit in contemplation or journal out some of the things that you personally wish to release and transform.

Dance

When you are ready, start the playlist. Move your body in a way that feels intuitive in each moment. No-one is watching so you can really let go of your inhibitions. When moving, I like to close my eyes or have a soft gaze so I stay more in my body. Just make sure you stay aware of where you are in the room so you don’t bang into any furniture and hurt yourself.

The playlist is designed to take you on a journey through the themes of Sagittarius: Truth, philosophy, optimism, wisdom, expansion. If thoughts, feelings or emotions come up for you keep moving them through your body. You might find that certain areas of your body, like your shoulders or hips, feel stiff at first and want to be moved in a certain way. This is your body releasing things that have become stuck.

When you get to the final song (Over the Rainbow) sit or lie down and allow the music to wash over you as your nervous system settles.

Once the music ends, you may find you want to lie in silence for awhile or journal about your experience. Just do whatever comes to you intuitively.

Post-ritual

Drink plenty of water after the ritual. Having a shower afterwards or a soak in the bath with some epsom/himalayan sea salts can be really nice as well to help symbolically ‘wash away’ anything that you were releasing. Eating magnesium-rich foods (bananas, almonds, dark chocolate) can also help replenish your system.

You might feel like you have an ‘energetic hangover’ the next day or have emotions come up. If this is the case, be gentle with yourself, rest when you can and drink lots of water.

I have been working with this style of ritual on the Full Moon for awhile now and have found it to be a great way to release and let go. I hope you find it as beneficial as I do.

With love

Tanya
