Love story in the stars

What your birth chart can tell you about dating and relationships

The grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for. We all must have something to love.

George Washington Burnap

Relationship questions come up quite frequently when I am working with clients. Our hearts want to love and be loved, and we crave the intimacy that a romantic relationship brings into our lives. So, in honour of Valentine’s Day I wanted to share with you what I look at when I am asked about relationships. (This is by no means a definitive list, and the story of the whole chart needs to be taken into consideration during any reading.)

Some terminology:

Birth chart: This shows where all the planets were at the moment you were born. It is your personal blueprint.

Houses: The birth chart is divided up into 12 areas which are called houses. Each house represents different areas of our lives.

Natal planet: Refers to where a planet is in your birth chart.

Transits: Where planets are in the sky right now. They interact with your birth chart and create your experiences and moments of growth.

The houses

The 5th house includes early romance, casual dating and sex so transits through this house can point to a flurry of new dating activity, or a boost of romance to an existing relationship. The 5th house also represents pleasure, creativity and self-expression, so you will be able to fully be yourself when you meet other people. It also includes children so unless you are in a place in your life where you would like children, be careful during those new love affairs.

The 7th house is where casual dating turns serious. Transits to this house can result in a deepening commitment in your relationships.

Honourable mention: An extension of the 7th is the 8th house, which is about merging with another, especially in relation to merging finances and resources (which happens when you move in with someone, or buy a house together). It looks at how we share power and the transformation that occurs when we do so.

The planets

Venus is the planet who gives us information about the qualities we look for in a relationship. She represents the feminine part of ourselves. Transits to your natal Venus can show how your relationships are developing, or your own personal sense of self-worth is evolving. Transits from Venus, especially through the 5th or 7th house, can bring a boost of new love or commitment into your life.

Mars is our masculine energy and in mythology he was the lover of Venus. A transit from Mars to your natal Venus or vice-versa can heighten your desire for a lover and increase your sex drive.

Honourable mentions: Juno is a Goddess Asteroid and represents marriage and commitment. Looking at Juno can give us more information about our attitude towards commitment and how it is playing out in our lives.

The Moon represents our emotional needs, so when we are talking about relationships we need to make sure that these needs will be met. A transit to your natal moon can tell a story about how to best nurture your heart.

If you are in a relationship

In a synastry chart reading we compare two charts to see how the people interact and get along. It is about looking at whether they can bring out the best in each other, have nice aspects that allow them to love and communicate in a way that feels good to both people. Understanding your partner’s chart can bring a whole new level to the relationship.

A composite chart reading blends two charts together to create a new one which shows the energy of the relationship itself. Unlike a birth chart, a composite chart only exists for the amount of time that people are in a relationship together.
